2021 U.S. Scrap TIre Workgroup (USSTWG)
2017 Midland County Road Commission Leads to 2021 Ingham CRD “Road Lasagna” The existing roadway goes through a wet area and has been sinking. At the bottom of the photo below, the sand is where the previous roadway was. The dark material on both edges is very organic and wet soils. This project is all being done within the road right of way. The semi tire “rings” were prepared with the sidewalls cut out. They are being placed touching in two rows in the bottom of the trench and filled with inert blast furnace slag (29A). A layer of slag is put over top, then a layer of tire derive aggregate (TDA). Then another two rows of tires are installed on the outside of the trench. Toward the top of the picture where there are people standing on sand, they will be paving on that. The black tubes are geotextile fabric that is being rolled out between the layers and you can see layers 2 and 3 of the tires. There will be three layers of tires, slag and TDA. This is being termed “road lasagna” at the site. The intent is that the tires will help contain the roadway and stop it from pushing out (side to side) and sinking. Red arrow is tire layer 1; Purple is tire layer 2; Green is tire layer 3; Yellow arrow is TDA layer. 11/1/2021 72
